Head Coach Mike McCarthy discusses Steelers’ focus ahead of first regular-season game

PITTSBURGH — Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy wrapped up his first official press conference of the season on Monday.

One of the biggest takeaways from this week is that the focus is all on themselves.

McCarthy is putting things pretty bluntly, saying he really doesn’t care about the other team right now. His focus is on making sure they have their priorities set and have a clear direction about how the guys want to play the game.

“We need to get our things set and get the direction clear of exactly how we want to play the game and I think our guys are doing a good job with that as far as the first steps in that direction,” McCarthy said.

When it comes to the health of the team, they are in a really good place.

McCarthy doesn’t anticipate anyone having a hard time being ready for Sunday, health-wise.

The big question that remains, though: What will happen with Joey Porter Jr.’s contract?

“We game-plan for Atlanta expecting everybody to play. We want to use the resources. I know we’re new at this. I have a board, and all healthy names are on the board. You have projections of [who] our 48 are going to be.

Both McCarthy and the rest of the team are looking forward to taking the field for a regular-season game.

There won’t be as much of an emotional aspect from McCarthy as there was in the preseason. He said those first two games at home really helped him get over some of those emotions, but he’s ready for the regular season.

McCarthy didn’t want to divulge too much information about some of their position battles and depth at wide receiver, noting the secrecy that comes along with Week 1.
