PITTSBURGH — Leaders in Pittsburgh are recognizing October as Homeless Children’s Awareness Month.
Officials gathered at the City-County Building Tuesday for a kick-off event by the Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF).
All month, the nonprofit will partner with organizations and other community members to shine a light on children’s homelessness.
According to the HCEF, nearly 4,000 children and youth in Allegheny County experience homelessness.
During Tuesday’s kick-off, participants held up drawings of children’s faces to connect the issue with real individuals and challenge assumptions of what homelessness looks like.
“You wouldn’t tell us that they are homeless,” Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor remarked. “They are kids that walk past us each and every day in the streets, and they are struggling. Which is why we have to continue to bridge gaps and have other opportunities.”
The HCEF provides educational programs, resources and support services to unhoused people and advocates for positive change.
This is the fund’s fifth consecutive year of Homeless Children’s Awareness Month events. Click here for more information.
