PITTSBURGH — Hundreds of people gathered for a celebration of community, taking over four blocks of Frankstown Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood.
The third annual Homewood Island Festival and block party started with a parade Sunday morning and featured about 80 vendors, along with food, children’s activities and community resources.
Organizers consider this the final block party of the summer.
They tell us they wanted to recreate the feeling of family, while supporting local entrepreneurs, connecting people with help and inspiring the next generation.
“A lot of people, when they hear the word Homewood, they think of a negative connotation, and we want to sort of change that narrative and let folks know this is love, this is community, this is thousands of people coming together,” said Vernard Alexander of the Homewood Island Planning Committee.
Pittsburgh’s mayor Corey O’Connor and Councilmember Khari Mosley were also in attendance.
Both presented proclamations to Alexander, thanking him for his work in the community.
