Iconic Mt. Washington restaurant, The Tin Angel, closes doors tonight

PITTSBURGH — After hosting local diners and national celebrities for almost 60 years, the Tin Angel will close permanently Saturday night.

Though it began as a barbershop, it became a cocktail lounge in December 1957. The Tin Angel gained popularity quickly because of its unique interior design, novel seating, and view of Pittsburgh’s point and three rivers.

Owner Paul Kyros gradually transformed The Tin Angel into a restaurant when he started serving steaks to people wanting a bite to eat before going home.

Over the past 60 years, The Tin Angel has hosted President Bill Clinton, British Prime Minister John Major, Cher, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Lynn Swann, Ben Roethlisberger and others.

Paul Kyros ran The Tin Angel until his passing in 2006, when his son and daughter, James Kyros and Maria Kyros Menniti, took over the business.

Though they have both worked at the restaurant since the 1970s, they both have additional careers.

"We're the next generation in a family business and continued our father's legacy.  But now we're both more active in our professions and our families. We decided it's time to move on,” said James Kyros.

The Kyros’ are looking for another lessee for the building.
