A man is accused of stealing a car and then crashing it into an Uber that had a passenger inside.
This vehicle theft reportedly happened early Sunday morning, ending in a crash near the 40th Street Bridge.
“Whiplash, bruised tailbone, bruised sternum.”
That’s what a man says he is dealing with after he was riding in an Uber, and a stolen SUV crashed into it early Sunday morning.
“My legs were crossed, just sitting there casually, so I didn’t really see the crash... but I was thrown backwards and I hit my head… that made me fly forward,” he told Channel 11.
According to investigators, Walter Banks was behind the wheel of an SUV he stole earlier that evening. He was driving south on Route 28 and crashed into the Uber as it was turning off the 40th Street Bridge.
Police say Banks didn’t wait around for officers to get there — he instead took off running toward the bridge.
Police say both vehicles were severely damaged after they both slid into the median, then another 50 feet.
The passenger didn’t feel the physical impact of the crash until the next day.
“The next morning when I woke up, it hurt super bad to take a full breath and to do simple things like opening the door and stuff,” the victim added.
Tonight, he’s thanking his Uber driver for helping him stay calm during the chaos of the crash.
“I was worried about him. Thanks to the Uber driver for telling me to get out of the car… because I was definitely just sitting there confused, and he was like ‘this is a car crash, we have to react to it,’” he said.
