Inbound Liberty Tunnel to close overnight next week for roof replacement project

Pittsburgh Traffic Alert

PITTSBURGH — The inbound Liberty Tunnel in Pittsburgh will close overnight on Monday, April 6, to allow for a roof replacement project.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the closure will begin at 8 p.m. Monday and continue until 5 a.m. Tuesday. This closure will affect northbound traffic, which will be detoured.

The work is part of a $3.47 million project to replace the portal roof and improve drainage within the tunnel.

While the work will require future overnight closures, PennDOT officials stated that the inbound and outbound tunnels will not close at the same time.

Drivers traveling inbound (northbound) will follow a posted detour through the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Motorists should take Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) northbound and use the left exit to Interstate 376 West and U.S. 19 South toward Carnegie, the airport and the West End.

The detour continues to Exit 69A toward U.S. 19 South and Banksville Road. Drivers should keep left toward South Truck 19/51 to loop back onto I-376 eastbound. Motorists will then follow I-376 through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and across the Fort Pitt Bridge.

For those needing access to Interstate 279, drivers should follow the posted I-279 signage. All other traffic should take the exit toward I-376 East and Monroeville, then use the left-hand exit to Grant Street at Exit 71A and turn right onto the Boulevard of the Allies.

The overall project, which includes drainage improvements and miscellaneous construction, is expected to be finished in late 2026.
