A 5-year-old girl is facing a long road to recovery after a crash on Dick Road in Connoquenessing on Aug. 3.
“I never expected something like this to happen with my daughter, and it’s really, really terrifying,” said Brett Sciullo, Rowan Sciullo’s father.
Rowan was in the car with her mom last Monday when she crashed into a tree. Both of them were flown to Pittsburgh.
“Whenever she was life-flighted into Children’s Hospital, she had a tear in her colon, intestine, and she had a split of her spine that broke down towards the lower lumbar area,” Sciullo told Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek.
Rowan had a spinal fusion to help strengthen her spine, the family said, so she can have a fraction of the life she had. Sciullo said doctors told them Rowan will not be able to move her legs.
“She’s not a sit still be quiet kind of girl,” Sciullo said. “It’s going to be hard, man. She’s going to wake up really, really mad. Whenever she has all the tubes and everything like that removed.”
A picture Sciullo posted on Facebook over the weekend showed a bright spot in her recovery. Doctors lessened her sedation, and she opened her eyes for the first time since the crash.
Sciullo said his daughter is a fighter.
“It’s not a race, a marathon. And it’s not something that’s going to stop in the hospital. It’s something that’s going to keep going,” he said.
A GoFundMe to help with Rowan’s recovery costs, therapy, ramps at her home, a chair, and anything else she may need has already raised nearly $30,000 as of Monday afternoon.
“Thank you to everybody who’s been there,” Sciullo said. Whether I know who you are or not, you let me know that God is alive in the world and that there is still purpose and good out there."
