Family of woman shot outside New Castle Walmart speaks out

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Melissa Spring, a 43-year-old Grove City mother of two kids is in the hospital after she was shot in the Walmart parking lot in Union Township on Sunday. State police said the incident happened just after 4 p.m.

The victim’s son said his mom was randomly shot while grocery shopping on Super Bowl Sunday in broad daylight. The family wants answers as police search for the shooter.

The son told channel 11 that Spring was shot in the stomach and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

“It was pretty terrifying. I don’t know what to think still,” he said.

The victim’s son said his mom is still fighting for her life even after she had surgery this morning. She’s still in critical condition but he said she’s expected to live.

“She’s a great mom and a great grandmother too. She’s a good person. It’s just crazy this happened to her,” he said.

The son said his family is in shock. They believe the shooting was random which concerns many shoppers we spoke with on Monday.

“The scary part is the randomness. It could happen to any one of us and the fact it’s at a public place like this,” said Tom Hutchison.

Tom Hutchison couldn’t believe this happened on Super Bowl Sunday outside the same supermarket he and his wife always shop at.

“We were really surprised. That just doesn’t happen around here,” said Hutchison.

Right now, state police are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information, call New Castle state police.
