NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Officer Nathaniel Cochran was placed on leave with the New Kensington Police Department in August, but Channel 11 learned that he resigned Monday evening.
Attorney Amanda Shields represents Anthony Delarosa, who was arrested this summer by Officer Nathaniel Cochran.
“My client walked away from this incident with a broken orbital bone, a broken nose, bruised ribs, and scratches and bruising on his face as well,” said Attorney Amanda Shields.
After the arrest, Officer Cochran was placed on leave, but his attorney says his use of force was justified.
“If you watch the video of the arrest, Mr. Delarosa keeps resisting arrest,” said Cochran’s Attorney Patrick Thomassey. “I mean, if the police come in here right now and say, put your hands behind your back, you’re getting arrested, we would do it, wouldn’t we? Or are we supposed to say no?”
When asked about the video of the arrest, Attorney Shields replied, “I have not seen that video because the Commonwealth has not tendered that video to me because they have continued the preliminary hearing twice.”
Channel 11 also confirmed the district attorney’s office is investigating Cochran. Still, his lawyer said he resigned from the New Kensington police department Monday evening because he simply did not want to do the job anymore.
“Well, a lot of police officers today are just tired of it,” said Attorney Thomassey.
Shields said Delarosa is now caught in the middle of the District Attorney’s investigation and is still facing aggravated assault charges after his arrest.
“At the first preliminary hearing, my client and I arrived, and we were told that it was going to be continued pending an investigation of officer Cochran,” said Attorney Shields. “If the district attorney’s office and the Commonwealth did not know exactly what the facts were against my client, I’m not sure why charges were even filed against him in the first place.”
Delarosa’s next preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 18th, and there have been no charges filed against officer Cochran at this time.
