A youth football coach says racial slurs toward children preceded a fight between adults at a game.
The fight was caught on video and has since gone viral. It happened between coaches during a game on Saturday between Carlynton and Keystone Oaks.
The Steel City Youth Football League says it suspended two coaches indefinitely, pending the outcome of an investigation. League officials are reviewing video, referee reports and statements from witnesses.
The league says each football organization, on their own, suspended additional coaches -- five more in total.
Dequay Canton is the coach who released a statement; he identified himself as the head coach of the Carlynton Little Cougars.
He says during the game, the other players were using racial slurs directed at his team. He said coaches addressed it with referees, but nothing happened. The kids accused of using the slurs are 8 and 9-years-old.
Canton also claims the other coach put his hands on him first.
“I am very disappointed by what happened and want to be clear that the actions witnessed on Saturday do not reflect my values or those of the organization,” his statement said in part. “We teach our players discipline, respect, teamwork, self-control, and sportsmanship both on and off the field. These principles are the foundation of what we preach and should be demonstrated by me.”
Keystone Oaks has not issued any statements.
Canton says his team is cooperating fully with their organization and league officials as they review the incident.
