PITTSBURGH — A man is facing several drug and gun charges after Pittsburgh police say they found marijuana, narcotics and a gun during a traffic stop.
Pittsburgh police say the traffic stop took place Saturday at the intersection of Beacon Street and Bartlett Street. Court documents state police decided to pull over a silver Dodge Journey after observing violations like not using a turn signal, not fully stopping at a stop sign, speeding and a suspended license for the vehicle’s registered owner.
After pulling the vehicle over, police say they smelled marijuana and saw a marijuana cigarette in plain view. Court documents add that police questioned the driver, identified as Jayron Johnson, 19, and then searched his person. On Johnson, police found a bundle of heroin/fentanyl, a knotted baggie of crack cocaine, a bag of marijuana and $470 in cash.
Court documents state Johnson denied using any of the drugs found in his possession.
Johnson initially did not give consent for police to search the vehicle, but after a detective spotted a gun inside they made contact with the vehicle’s registered owner — Johnson’s mother — and she gave them permission, per the court documents. In that search, police recovered a 9mm handgun with a laser attachment from underneath the driver’s seat.
Johnson, who doesn’t have a concealed carry permit and cannot possess firearms, told police he had the gun for protection.
Johnson was taken to the Allegheny County Jail and denied bond. He faces several charges, including persons not to possess a firearm, possession with intent to deliver and several traffic violations.
