Local grocer returns to Millvale Borough after 20 years

MILLVALE BOROUGH, Pa. — After more than 20 years without a grocery store, Millvale Borough is celebrating the return of a local grocer.

A small coffee shop and corner market, Millvale Market, is set to launch on Grant Avenue in the coming months.

“This space was created by the community and for the community,” said co-owner Jen Saffron at a pre-launch event Friday.

The market will focus on health and wellness, providing fresh, locally-grown produce, groceries, coffee, and prepared foods.

“It’s meant to lift the public health, nutrition, and dignity of this community,” said Saffron.

The coffee shop and grocer will make access to food much easier for the many people in Millvale who rely on walking, biking, and public transportation, according to Millvale Mayor Brian Spoales.

“We don’t have a bus to a supermarket unless you want to wait and go out to Giant Eagle in Fox Chapel,” he said. “Our seniors have no place to go.”

The shop aims to embody the spirit of the Millvale community while contributing to a growing small business district.

“The backbone of any great community is the small business district in which residents, visitors, and other businesses can do business on the Main Street,” said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

An official opening date for the market has not yet been announced, but it is expected to open early next year.
