SMITHFIELD, Pa. — A 20-month-old boy from Fayette County, who was allegedly abused by his mother's ex-boyfriend, continues to recover in the hospital.
Chase Hay has been in Children's Hospital since Oct. 4.
Police said the toddler was severely shaken and had serious injuries to his head, kidney and liver.
The alleged abuse happened at the boy's mother's home on Liberty Avenue in Smithfield.
Police said a witness told them the suspect, Ray Matteson, attempted to call off responding paramedics.
Arrest papers said that after allegedly shaking the boy, Matteson put the baby's face under a running faucet and tried to give him a bath.
Hay's mom told Channel 11 Tuesday that he faces a long road to recovery.
"It's hard seeing your baby laying there. With everyone supporting and stuff like that it's knowing that he's getting better, and he's here with us. That's all that matters," said Lori Brundege, Hay's mom.
Brundege said at one point, she thought she may lose Hay.
"He's a fighter. He's my little soldier," she said.
A family friend started a Facebook page to rally support for Chase.
"The prayer warriors have been so awesome. It's hard to believe that so many people pray for someone they don't know. I think he has over 4,000 likes," Brundege said.
Donations to help with Hay's recovery can be made to the Chase Hay Recovery Fund at any PNC Bank.
Matteson is charged with aggravated and simple assault and child endangerment. He faces a hearing next month.
