WASHINGTON, Pa. — A 24-inch water main break disrupted service for dozens of customers Tuesday along North College Street in Washington.
Pennsylvania American Water said 96 customers were affected.
Joyce Nightingale, who lives in an apartment building along North College Street, said she initially thought the sound of water outside was rain.
“And I thought it was raining out, but it was not raining!” said Nightingale. “This is really something that’s never happened before in the four years I lived here.”
Nightingale’s friend, Tammy Noble, said she had driven near the site shortly before the break occurred.
“I was just sick when I saw all that water,” Noble said. “When it broke up that road and I saw that hole, I thought that could have been us over there in that hole.”
For some residents, the lack of water posed a real problem.
Nurse Judith Patterson said her client Therese Johnson lived in an apartment with low water pressure.
“I don’t feel like it’s safe for her to be in a building all day long like that because she has a lot of medical problems,” Patterson said. “I’m going to take her to my home and just keep checking to see when she’s able to come back into the apartment.”
Pennsylvania American Water said repairs were expected to be completed sometime Wednesday morning.
Nearby Washington & Jefferson College was not affected by the break, according to Pennsylvania American Water.
