After years of tight inventory and soaring home prices, many first-time buyers and new investors are turning to “house hacking.” The approach involves buying a small multifamily property, such as a duplex, triplex or fourplex, and living in one unit while renting out the others.

But some metros offer considerably higher potential returns than others.

Pittsburgh ranked 12th in a recent house hacking analysis among major metros based on factors such as affordability, income potential, rental demand and market growth.
