PITTSBURGH — Eligible TSA PreCheck members without flights can now pass through security at Pittsburgh International Airport.
TSA rolled out a new program called Gateside by TSA PreCheck to 13 airports back in September. It’s now expanding into additional airports, including Pittsburgh.
The program allows members of the background check program to go through security even without a flight.
PreCheck members can use their known traveler number (KTN) to use the security lanes to meet a person at a gate, shop at airport stores, or eat in an airport restaurant.
This type of program isn’t new for Pittsburgh International Airport. In 2017, the airport launched myPITpass, a program that also allowed non-ticketed visitors to pass through security. The program was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and then for terminal construction.
“PIT has long recognized that an airport is more than a place to catch a flight,” said Travis McNichols, PIT’s Chief Operations Officer. “It’s a place where people come together. We’ve seen the value of giving our community greater access to the airport, and we’re pleased to once again work with TSA to give people the opportunity to experience our terminal, welcome loved ones and enjoy the airport beyond the security checkpoint.”
The TSA program differs from myPITpass in that only TSA PreCheck enrollees are eligible.
The TSA said there is no additional cost for Gateside, but you must apply for a pass 1 to 3 days before a planned visit. If approved, the pass is valid for one calendar day.
Once at the airport, visitors use a TSA PreCheck screening lane and must show a Real ID and may be required to show their approval status through Gateside’s mobile portal.
