Pavement failure shuts down road in Hampton Township

A portion of McCully Road in Hampton Township reopened Wednesday evening after a pavement failure forced the road to close for more than four hours.

According to PennDOT, crews reopened the road around 7:40 p.m.

Drone 11 captured construction crews working to repair a large hole that formed within a work zone.

“It’s a very busy road. It’s going to inconvenience a lot of people,” Hampton Township resident Norm Miller said. “What about the emergency vehicles going up and down and stuff like that?”

The entrances to Hampton High School, Hampton Shaler Water Authority and the township’s police and EMS station are all located along McCully Road.

The closure also affected the school district around dismissal. 

Hampton Township School District sent a message to parents and guardians warning that buses

 could arrive at stops 10 to 15 minutes late.

“What about the kids and the school buses?” Miller said. “A lot of delays, and they have to maneuver traffic around.”

Several parents who spoke with Channel 11 off camera said they were surprised when we showed them the large size of the hole that caused the closure.

“I would like to say all the rain we’ve been having, but I couldn’t even guess because that’s a major hole,” Miller said.

PennDOT confirmed that a pavement failure within a work zone caused the closure. 

Channel 11 is working to learn what led to the failure.
