Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin is beginning a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona

Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin is beginning a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Sunday. The 20-year-old is currently on the 60-day injured list with a left ring finger sagittal band injury.

Griffin, who is eligible to return on Friday, was originally placed on the 10-day injured list on July 7 (retroactive to July 6). He was transferred to the 60-day IL four days later. The promising rookie suffered the injury on a defensive play in a game against the Nationals on July 5.

Griffin traveled to Bradenton, Fla., on Aug. 19 to resume baseball activities after transitioning out of a splint that was needed to immobilize the injury.

Griffin has played in 59 games as a rookie and carries a .276/.332/.404 batting line with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 25 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He’s played 56 games at shortstop and started three games as designated hitter.

Jared Triolo (.630 OPS) and Jacob Gonzalez (.615 OPS) have split time at short in Griffin’s absence.
