WEST HOMESTEAD, Pa. — Police are working to inform bicyclists who travel on the Great Allegheny Passage that they need to slow down and obey traffic signs.
West Homestead police spent the weekend on the Waterfront trying to get bicyclists to slow down and obey the signs. They’re threatening riders with possible citations and points on their driver’s licenses.
Police said it’s more about educating riders than fining them. Patrolman Charlie Rozzo told Channel 11’s Katherine Amenta that no tickets were issued this past weekend.
“Right now, we’re just trying to figure out the best way to keep the trail, the sidewalks, the pedestrians and the bicyclists happy and safe,” Rozzo said. “That’s the main purpose of West Homestead being down there and it’s not to hand out citations.”
Some people believe the possibility of points on your driver’s license would be a good idea for bicyclists disobeying the signs.
“It’s very dangerous. It’s just like a car running through a stop sign, only a car’s going to hit them and they’re going to be the one that gets hurt,” Craig Bolinger said.
