PrimoHoagies quietly closes downtown Pittsburgh location

PITTSBURGH — PrimoHoagies has quietly closed its downtown location.

The submarine sandwich chain was first founded in Philadelphia in the 1990s and has grown substantially. It currently operates over 120 stores across the country, with approximately half of them located in Pennsylvania. It first announced plans to enter the Pittsburgh market in 2021 as part of a broader national franchise expansion. Its first shop opened in The Terminal development in the Strip District the following year, and locations in Pleasant Hills, Peters Township and downtown followed, but the former ultimately did not last.

The 526 Penn Ave. location quietly shuttered its doors, with no major announcement made and a sign reading simply “closed” placed in the window. Tables and equipment appear to have been removed as well. The downtown space boasts a close proximity to the Cultural District, namely Heinz Hall, as well as Highmark Health’s headquarters at Fifth Avenue Place and Market Square. A representative for PrimoHoagies did not respond to a request for additional comment.
