CANTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — People evacuated from the Washington Estates community Sunday have been allowed to return home after floodwaters receded.

Neighbors described chaotic conditions as first responders went door to door, urging people to move their cars and evacuate.
Rich Bennett said firefighters were already in the community by the time he sat down for breakfast.
“They knocked on everybody’s door around here, told us to move our cars, so we moved our cars,” Bennett said.
He said heavy rain began around 5 or 6 a.m., with water quickly covering the road.
Channel 11 crews captured video as evacuations were underway.

Canton Township declared a state of emergency Sunday, reporting flooded roads, washed-out driveways, abandoned vehicles and people rescued from cars.
Another neighbor, Troy McClellane, said water eventually began creeping into his home.
“I woke up, I go on the front porch and it’s all flooded,” McClellane said. “Believe it or not, I put some floaties on and went down and walked through it.”

By 2 p.m., the water in Washington Estates had receded enough for families to return.
Cleanup efforts across the area are continuing.
The American Red Cross did have staff at an evacuation center at Canton Township Fire Station No. 1 for people who needed assistance.
