Route 28 wrong-way detection testing to cause intermittent traffic stoppages

Driver should expect traffic stoppages on Route 28 ramps on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

PennDOT plans to test wrong-way detection systems along Route 28 off-ramps on those days, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The work requires stoppages of 15 minutes or less.

The following locations will be subject to testing:

Southbound Route 28 off-ramp to Fox Chapel Road/Waterworks Drive/Freeport Road (Exit 8)
Southbound Route 28 left-hand off-ramp to 40^th Street Bridge/Lawrenceville (Exit 3A)
Southbound Route 28 off-ramp to Millvale (Exit 3B)
Southbound Route 28 to Anderson Street
Northbound Route 28 off-ramp to Fox Chapel Road/Waterworks Drive/Freeport Road (Exit 8)
Northbound Route 28 left-hand off-ramp to 40^th Street Bridge/Lawrenceville (Exit 3A)
Northbound Route 28 left-hand off-ramp to Etna (Exit 4)
Northbound Route 28 right-hand off-ramp to Chestnut Street

The $4.8 million safety project is part of a major effort to save lives by stopping wrong-way crashes on the roadway.

The system is designed to alert wrong-way drivers and, if necessary, notify a traffic management center.
