ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Bethel Park School District sent a note to families about severe weather damage in the community and widespread power outages at several schools. The superintendent says the district will make a determination about school on Friday around 5 a.m.
In Bethel Park, whipping winds caused a tent to move across the football field. The tent made it across the grass in one piece until it hit the goal post. It happened before a Joey Fabus Foundation charity football game between Bethel Park and Moon Area, which was later canceled.
In Squirrel Hill, a car was swept up by floodwaters on Northumberland Street between Forbes Avenue and Squirrel Hill, close to the Bob O’Connor Golf Course.
Also in Squirrel Hill, our crews found giant ponds of water on the roads at the intersection of Valmont Street and Aylesboro Avenue.
North Highland Avenue was shut down near the intersection of Stanton Avenue for a large tree down with a power line along with it.
In South Oakland, a huge mess along Bates Street between Second Avenue and the Boulevard of the Allies. Our cameras captured a huge tree lying in the middle of Bates Street that caused a lot of problems, especially for several Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses that weren’t able to get through.
And along Saw Mill Run Blvd, a familiar scene for many business owners who are well-versed in the area’s flooding.
Keegan Mahaney owns Compact Cars of Pittsburgh. He said, “I couldn’t even get down to their lot because it was already flooded that deep. In my lot it was waist high, and I was just focused on my cars at that time.“
Storm damage and power outages have prompted the McKeesport Area School District to say that Friday will be an Asynchronous Flexible Instruction Day.
