BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. — The Shapiro Administration announced $380 million in new transportation investments for the Pittsburgh region during an event in Bridgeville on Thursday.
The funding will support more than 100 construction projects across Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials identified 58 projects expected to be bid this year, while another 52 projects will continue through 2026. The investment aims to improve more than 1,200 miles of highways and address needs for 43 bridges throughout the three-county area.
Jason Zang, the PennDOT District 11 executive, said the upcoming work extends well beyond the most visible projects in the region.
“While the innovative I-376 Commercial Street Bridge replacement project is the highlight of our construction season, it is only the tip of the iceberg,” Zang said. “With more than 100 projects in construction in 2026, we are committed to delivering meaningful projects across our entire transportation system.”
The regional funding is part of a broader effort under Gov. Josh Shapiro. Since the administration took office, Pennsylvania has improved 19,451 miles of roadway and advanced work on 1,738 state and local bridges. The current 2025-26 state budget also allocates $37.5 million this fiscal year to preserve less-traveled rural roads across 20 counties.
In Beaver and Lawrence counties, $6 million is being invested to improve nearly 20 miles of rural roads. These improvements are moving forward five years faster than originally planned due to redirected Motor License Fund investments. In Beaver County, work includes milling and paving on seven miles of Tuscarawas Road in Ohioville Borough and Brighton Township, as well as segments of Market Street, Hollow Road, Elmwood Avenue and Centennial Boulevard.
Lawrence County will see milling and resurfacing on nearly two miles of Route 551 and more than two miles of Route 351 in Enon Valley Borough and Little Beaver Township. Additionally, a betterment project on Route 422 in Lawrence County, estimated between $19 million and $21 million, is scheduled to begin this year.
Major new projects in Allegheny County starting this year include the $99.31 million I-376 Parkway East betterment between Edgewood and Churchill and the $50.77 million McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge preservation. Work will also begin on the I-376 “Bathtub” flood control system, an investment estimated at $31 million to $35 million.
Several significant projects are scheduled to finish this year. These include the Liberty Tunnel roof replacement and the Route 28 wrong-way detection system in Allegheny County. In Beaver County, the betterment project on Route 68 from Virginia Avenue to Adams Street is also expected to conclude.
Long-term projects that will continue through and beyond 2026 include the $95.07 million replacement of the I-376 Commercial Street Bridge and the $46.5 million I-79 Wexford Interchange improvement. In Lawrence County, work will continue on the $7.28 million East Washington Street Bridge replacement.
As these work zones become active, transportation officials are asking motorists to prioritize safety. Drivers are urged to maintain posted speed limits, keep headlights on and avoid distractions while traveling through construction areas.
Bidding is expected to open for more than 58 new projects throughout the year. Another 52 projects currently underway will continue through the 2026 construction season.
