PITTSBURGH — The first-ever Slow Tech Festival graced the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on Sunday.
It aimed to introduce kids to older technology while giving parents alternatives to smartphones and tablets. The hope is to foster healthier development.
One option for kids was landlines that work through WiFi, giving them the ability to practice one-on-one communication.
“What we are finding is kids without the landlines, they’re going straight to a lot of text messaging, and they’re not learning how to talk on the phone anymore,” PA Unplugged co-founder Kristen Beddard said. “And this is a really crucial foundational skill that kids still need to learn.”
Organizers of the event say many modern devices take away the good and bad moments of operating in the real world that promote healthy development.
