‘That’s their whole day’: Parents frustrated about bus schedules in Ambridge

AMBRIDGE, Pa. — The new school year is just getting underway, but frustrations over bus schedules are reaching a boiling point in Ambridge.

“It’s been an issue; they’re never here at the same time,” said Hannah Hashman, a parent of students at Baden Academy.

She said concerns started the very first week of school.

“They gave us a starting time to get picked up at 6:45 a.m.”

She said she and her kids stood outside for an hour and the bus never came.

Just a few days later, when her kids were supposed to be home at 4:20 p.m., she said they didn’t get home until 6 p.m.

“That’s their whole day,” Hashman said. “Like they don’t even have time to do anything. They have time to do homework, and then they’re in that set, go to bed.”

Hashman said she called ABC Transit.

“And they said that the times that they give you on the schedule doesn’t matter, and that they can come and go as they please.”

Hashman isn’t alone. Other parents who live in Ambridge Area School District but send their kids to Baden Academy Charter School also told Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek they’re having issues.

“The bus was not on time in the morning or in the evening all week only to be exacerbated when average and other school districts went back the following week,” Caryn Acs said.

Channel 11 asked ABC Transit about these complaints. Todd O’Shell, the executive vice president, sent a statement saying:

“ABC Transit Inc. works diligently every day to ensure routes are operated timely in all our school districts. As we start the school year, individual bus stop time concerns in Ambridge Area are being reviewed by our team and the District. ABC Transit strives daily for every student’s on-time pick-up and return from school. And we will continue to work toward that goal.”

Parents who spoke to Channel 11 said they want to see ABC Transit add another route, have a better plan, or at least better communication.

“It just seems like nobody wants to put in the effort,” Acs said.

Channel 11 contacted administrators at Baden Academy and Ambridge Area School District for comment but did not hear back.
