PITTSBURGH — An unexploded grenade was found inside a trash can near the federal building in Downtown Pittsburgh on Monday morning.

The Pittsburgh Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was called to the 1000 block of Liberty Avenue to safely remove it.

The grenade has been taken to the city’s firing range.

Public Safety officials said it’s likely inert, but are still working to verify that.

Pittsburgh Police are assisting the Department of Homeland Security in the investigation.
