United Steelworkers International and two of the region’s biggest steel companies will negotiate past the Tuesday morning expiration of both contracts with a 30-day extension approved Monday.
The four-year labor agreements expiring at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday affect thousands of workers at United States Steel Corp.’s Mon Valley Works and Ohio, Indiana and one eastern Pennsylvania location of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. Both sets of negotiations have been held in Pittsburgh although it wasn’t clear whether USW and the two companies met Monday. The union said negotiations would continue in the coming days.
“The USW remains committed to reaching strong agreements that recognize the contributions of union members and protect the future of good, family-supporting steel jobs,” said USW International President Roxanne Brown. “While negotiations continue, workers will remain on the job, producing high-quality products under the terms and conditions of the current agreements.”
U.S. Steel confirmed the extension.
