PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh community coming together with a focus on preventing violence.
A community group called REACH hosted its final summer cookout at Chartiers Park in the West End on Friday night. Their goal is to reduce violence in the area. One way they try to do that is by bringing people together, which is why events like the cookout are important to their efforts.
Party visitors enjoyed food, family-friendly games and music.
Former NFL star and Pittsburgh native Dane Jackson made a special visit.
“I was one of these kids before. I played on this exact same field from this side of town. Just being able to see the smile on the kids’ faces, I think that’s what guys like me, guys that give back to the community, that’s what they do it for,” Jackson said.
Organizers say stronger connections among people create safer communities.
