West Mifflin School District debates consolidating schools amid financial deficit

According to the district, this year’s budget estimates a $2.8 million deficit.  — The West Mifflin School District is debating whether it needs to consolidate schools to address a serious financial challenge.

The proposed changes mean Clara Barton Elementary would become district offices.

Students at Homeville Elementary would move to the middle school building.

The district says it’s to save money.

Some parents said there has to be another way.

“Nobody that I know is for this plan,” parent Robin Konieczka said.

Changes could be on the horizon for not just elementary students, but for Seventh through 12th graders who would all be moved into the high school.

The district says the buildings would be broken down into “age-appropriate” areas.

According to the district, this year’s budget estimates a $2.8 million deficit.

The district says this plan aims to stabilize the budget without raising taxes.

“I feel like the district itself just keeps wanting to save money and the way that they’re doing it is screwing over the students and the parents,” Konieczka said.

The district also cited declining enrollment nearly every year since 2018.

Right now, the district is asking to hear from parents on an online survey.

“Listen to the parents and the people who are paying the taxes. None of us want this. We all really love our neighborhood elementary schools and don’t want them to go. We love Homeville; our kids love Homeville,” Konieczka said.

The next step in this process is Tuesday, Nov. 3, when the district will host a town hall meeting.

The district has created an online form for parents to share their opinions.
