At Jerry Matulevic's baseball camp in Cherry City, campers and staff alike are being careful.

"It's pretty intense. Intense heat," said camper Joe Professori.

The heat wave hit just as summer camp season kicked off. Campers said they enjoy coming to places like Matulevic's camp to hone skills and prepare for the upcoming baseball season.

But when the temperatures sizzle,Matulevic, a baseball coach and camp owner, said beating the heat is a lesson no one can afford to miss. Matulevic has run his camp for 29 years and said this is one of the hottest.

"We make sure they get the fluids. Fluids are the biggest thing," Matulevic said.

Parent Melissa Pallerino is helping to watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

"I check to see if they take their hats off, they're dragging while running. But these coaches here are wonderful. They make sure they get water breaks," Pallerino said.

At a soccer camp in Sewickley Hills, camp organizer Kristin Steffey said she and her staff are being extra cautious.

"We're looking to make sure none of the kids are lethargic, dizzy," said Steffey. "Anytime they ask for a drink or look to sit down, we make sure to let them do that. We don't try to push them through anything."
