Task force tracks down man wanted for shooting, killing man on North Side

PITTSBURGH — The U.S. Marshall's Western Pennsylvania Fugutive Task Force tracked down the man wanted for fatally shooting a man Thursday night on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Aaron Fernandes, 27, of Sheraden, was taken into custody Wednesday morning. He's charged with homcide, robbery and carrying a firearm without a license.

Investigators identified the victim as Michael Mongeluzzo, 27, of Uniontown.

The victim’s girlfriend, Kirsty Thorb, said she and Mongeluzzo were driving down Pressley Street around 10:15 p.m. when their car was shot at several times.

Mongeluzzo was hit, and drove into the Giant Eagle parking lot on Cedar Avenue for help, but it was too late.

Medics took him to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died from several gunshot wounds.

“He basically died in my arms because he was DOA at the hospital,” Kirsty Thorb said. “The last thing Michael said before he died was that he loved me.”

Pittsburgh police immediately put out an alert for two men in a silver Saturn that was seen speeding away from the scene.

Thorb said she doesn't know why Mongeluzzo was killed.

"He was so attentive and sweet. He was an amazing man,” she said. “He didn’t deserve to die like that.”

Mongeluzzo is a Fayette County native who was living in Uniontown. Police have not released a motive for why he was targeted.
