18-year-old dead, another person hurt after 2 shootings on same Pittsburgh street

PITTSBURGH — Police were called for two shootings, one of which turned deadly, in about three hours on the same street in Pittsburgh’s Northview Heights neighborhood.

Just after midnight Thursday, 18-year-old Tyjuan Malachi was shot in the head in the 800 block of Mt. Pleasant Road, police said. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

Officers were alerted to that shooting by a ShotSpotter notification for multiple shots fired. They quickly found the victim because they were already in the area for an earlier shooting, police said.

The earlier shooting happened about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, also in the 800 block of Mt. Pleasant Road. ShotSpotter notifications indicated that several shots were fired.

A short time later, a man showed up at a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. His condition has not been made available.

Both shootings are under investigation.

Oliva Bennett, who is the Allegheny County Counselor for district 13 and lives in Northview Heights, reported hearing the shots.

“I would first want to extend my condolences and my deepest sympathy but i also would like them to invite them,” she said. “In these spaces end places where we are really trying to combat this type of violence and trying to give communities such as Northview things and resources to keep folks and our kids occupied.”

Bennett says she would also like to see police build relationships with the people in her community. She says police out a small police station into the community a couple of years ago to combat violence and also help police build relationships with people in the community but she says more needs to be done.

“We would be seeing something different if they actually came in and did what they said they were going to do,” she said.
