Allegheny Co. Sheriff’s Office warns residents about phone scam targeting medical community

ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. — The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in the area that is targeted toward “specifically members of the medical community.”

The sheriff’s office said it has received several complaints about the calls that pretended to originate from that office.

According to the release, the scammer tells victims they have outstanding issues -- such as jury duty or unpaid summons -- which prompted a warrant issued for their arrest.

In most cases, the victims are asked to pay the scammer through money orders or gift cards.

Authorities said to never provide any funding or personal information to the caller if you receive a call like that. The sheriff’s office will not ask for those types of funding.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the source of those scam calls.
