Allegheny County’s COVID-19 positivity rate drops below state’s ‘concerning’ benchmark

Only two western Pennsylvania counties are among the state’s leaders in terms of positivity rate of weekly COVID-19 tests, according to a release from the governor’s office.

Gov. Tom Wolf’s office released coronavirus data for the week of July 24 - July 31 on Friday, and no local counties are at the top in terms of testing positivity for the first time in about a month.

While the statewide percent-positivity was just 4.1% this past week -- down 4.6% from last week -- the following counties had “concerning” rates, according to the release:

  • Union (11.8%)
  • Indiana (7.9%)
  • Fayette (7.7%)
  • Fulton (7.4%)
  • Huntingdon (6.7%)
  • Erie (6.2%)
  • Mercer (6.2%)
  • Lawrence (6.0%)
  • Northumberland (6.0%)
  • York (5.8%)
  • Clearfield (5.7%)
  • Luzerne (5.4%)
  • Juniata (5.3%)
  • Lancaster (5.3%)
  • Beaver (5.2%)
  • Delaware (5.2%)
  • Mifflin (5.0%)

Most of the counties listed were in central and eastern Pa., including Union County -- which had a positivity rate of more than 11%.

Notably, Allegheny County dropped below the state’s benchmark for the first time since health officials began releasing the data.
