Animal shelter targeted by thieves

An animal shelter in Fayette County was targeted by thieves.

But those thieves didn't target the animals or even the money.

This isn't the first time burglars have targeted the Fayette Friends of Animals.

Workers and volunteers tell Channel 11 they now think it’s time to install surveillance.

TRENDING NOW:

“Everything is donated all for the animals, it's kind of hard for everyone to take,” said kennel worker Reid Mosser.

Volunteers arrived Sunday to find the shed door pried open and all their big appliances stolen.

"They stole a used washing machine, saw, new weedwacker, used push mower," Mosser said. "Most wasn't worth much, but we needed it!"

The no-kill animal shelter takes care of 70 dogs, all waiting to be adopted.

Mosser said he thinks the dogs would have been excited to see the thieves.

"They probably thought someone was going to take them for a walk, not realizing someone is taking things away from them," Mosser said.

The theft isn't a first here; shelter workers say picnic tables and other items have been stolen.

The shelter took to Facebook right after the incident, speaking directly to the burglars, saying all the items were donated, and "shame on you".

To the persons who broke into our shed--SHAME ON YOU!! Those items that you stole were either donated by caring...

While many in the community are asking how they can help, Mosser says the shelter needs money for surveillance cameras

"We have a bigger problem, besides people stealing, people dropping animals off," Mosser said. "We had a dog tied to the dumpster last week, baby kittens dropped off in the rain, by the time we find them in the morning they are almost dead."
