Development team plans to convert former Smithfield Cafe properties into short-stay apartments

A long-empty downtown landmark may soon get new life on Smithfield Street.

A development team working as Smithfield Development Partners is proposing to convert an assemblage of four properties on Smithfield Street including the former eight-story Smithfield Cafe building into a short-stay apartment project expected to include a restaurant.

The details for the project were revealed by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership on its website in advance of a Development Activities Meeting scheduled for July 8.

Smithfield Development Partners includes Thomas Bost, an investor in the Ace Hotel Pittsburgh in East Liberty who also worked with Milhaus on its Arsenal 201 project in Lawrenceville, as well as Al and Jason Lardo, who are currently leading the Rockwell Park redevelopment in North Point Breeze.
