PITTSBURGH — A local veteran hand-delivered a special message to Washington, D.C., with the hope it helps Americans heal from last week’s deadly riots.
Walter Lang is an Army veteran, originally from Bethel Park, who served in Korea.
Like many, he was angered by the video and the images he saw coming from our nation’s capital last Wednesday.
“That’s just a desecration of everything we stand for. As a veteran, as a father, as a grandfather, I don’t know how to explain this to my kids or grandkids,” Lang said.
Two of the five people killed were veterans — one a Capitol police officer, and the other a woman who participated in the riot.
“You never stop holding onto that oath, protecting our flag and our Constitution. I’m sad to say veterans took part in something like that,” Lang said.
Looking to heal his emotional wounds, Lang went to an area monument dealer and bought a block of Potomac marble — the same material used to construct the Capitol building.
He made a plaque with the words “One Country, One Constitution, One Destiny” etched on it.
Lang and his wife then drove the plaque to D.C. where it was inspected and presented to a member of the Capitol police force.
“The officer saw it, read it and got emotional over it,” Lang said.
Lang believes the country can and will move forward — but in its own time.
“We’re all Americans, and we all need to act like it,” he said.
