Man hit, killed by public works truck was heading to snow blow neighbors’ driveways during storm

NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. — A man out clearing his neighbors’ driveways was hit and killed by a North Versailles plow truck on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators said the truck was backing up a steep alley in the 100 block of Union Avenue when 63-year-old John Vichie was killed.

“Anytime we had a big snow like that, he would get out his snow blower. He wouldn’t even tell you. My dad had no idea he was even back there doing it. That’s just who he was,” Kelly Bradich, a family friend, told Channel 11.

Bradich’s family said Vichie was heading down the alley to do another neighbor’s driveway when he was killed. It’s a loss she’s feeling deeply as Vichie also looked in on her elderly father when she couldn’t get there.

“They would meet up outside in the back every day almost and just talk, see how he was doing, how he was feeling and John [Vichie] would tell him about the little things he was doing around the house. He was just that type of guy,” she said. “Very kind. Very giving. And never asked for anything else in return. We are all going to miss him very dearly.”

Vichie was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s not clear if there will be any charges filed.
