Man purposely crashes into Pittsburgh gas station, tries to steal ATM

PITTSBURGH — A man purposely crashed his pickup truck into a gas station and tried to steal an ATM Friday morning in Pittsburgh’s Hill District neighborhood, police said.

The crash happened about 7 a.m. at the Sunoco gas station on Centre Avenue.

Police said the man was unable to pick up the ATM and took off in the truck, but he was found and arrested on Fifth Avenue in the city’s Uptown neighborhood.

The crash left a hole in the gas station and knocked down shelves inside. A worker said he turned around to put something in the cooler and heard the crash a few seconds later.

Customers were inside the store, but none of them were hurt.

Police said the man suffered some minor facial injuries and appeared to be intoxicated when they arrested him. Charges had not been filed as of Friday afternoon.
