Man suspected in Pittsburgh road rage shooting in custody after SWAT standoff

PITTSBURGH — A man and a woman were shot Friday during a road rage incident in Pittsburgh, and the suspect was arrested Saturday morning after a two-hour SWAT standoff, officials said.

A man in a pickup truck on Banksville Road tried running a car off the road, crashed into it, then shot a man in that car in the face around 12:15 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

A woman who was riding in the car might have been grazed by a bullet. Both people are expected to survive their injuries.

The man in the pickup truck was later identified by police as Kevin McClintock, 52. Pittsburgh police issued a warrant for his arrest and said he was considered armed and dangerous. Just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday, McClintock surrendered to authorities after the SWAT standoff, which happened in the 1000 block of Saw Mill Run Boulevard.

Michelle Beaver, who watched as the road rage incident started Friday, told Channel 11 not long after the victims' car was forced into the embankment, she heard gunshots.

“The aggressor jumped out of his pick up, jumped on the trunk of the victim’s car -- and I heard three pops,” she said.

Beaver said she saw a little boy in the car and rushed to help him.

This was not a random road rage incident, however. In a police criminal complaint, investigators said the situation started Thursday night at the Comfort Inn on Banksville Road -- when McClintock allegedly took the fuses out of his niece’s car and flattened the tires of that woman’s boyfriend’s car.

The next day, the couple and their son were driving near the Eat’n Park when they noticed McClintock’s truck in front of them. As they were at the red light, the victims told police they heard the passenger side window shatter -- so he pulled the car over and his girlfriend got out.

At that point, the victim said McClintock rammed into the back of his car, so he drove off with his 3-year-old son in the backseat. McClintock followed behind and continued to shoot at the victim’s car, according to the criminal complaint.

The complaint said McClintock again rammed his truck into the victim’s car, causing that car to crash into a tree. The victim got out and wrestled with McClintock over his gun, and the man told police he was shot during this struggle.

McClintock faces two counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm and three counts of recklessly endangering another person.
