Missing 25-year-old man’s van found with keys in ignition near Pittsburgh trail

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are looking for a missing man who was last seen Saturday in Beechview.

Thomas Hughes, 25, was last seen at around 11 p.m. Saturday when he was leaving his parents’ house.

When he failed to return and answer his phone, the family said they knew something was wrong.

They immediately got in the car and started frantically driving around the area, looking for the silver van Hughes left in.

It was at the entrance of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail on the South Side where the family said they made a discovery.

“She was right there and seen it. She said, ‘Oh my god. That’s the van.’ Pulled over. And the key was in the ignition, but my brother is nowhere to be found. His phone has been dead since 7 or 8 this morning,” said Thomas Hughes’ sister Alexis Hughes.

Police blocked off part of 18th Street while investigators searched Thomas Hughes’ Volkswagen van and the surrounding area for clues.

River Rescue could also be seen scouring the riverbank in hopes of finding Hughes.

Hughes is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, 260 lbs. with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, dark blue jeans, black boots and a black Carhartt jacket.

His family told Channel 11 they just want him home.

“It’s something that’s completely unlike him. He’s never done this before. I’m worried sick,” Alexis Hughes said.

His family is begging the public to get the word out and help bring their loved one home.

“If you see it on the Facebook site, please share,” said Thomas Hughes’ cousin Kayla Andrews.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Special Victims Unit at (412) 323-7141.
