According to investigators, the grandmother knows Johnston.  The two were cordial prior to the incident, she told police.

She told investigators was she sitting in her apartment and Johnson told her to look at a text message on his phone.  That message stated—“This is a robbery.”

According to the criminal complaint, Johnson pulled out a gun and said, “Yeah, I’m going to rob you,” and forced her onto her stomach.  He then tied her up using a white phone charger chord, a bandanna and shoestrings.

She claims Johnson told her: “I’m on the run. I got nothing to lose.”

She told him to take whatever he needed.  She eventually broke free and escaped. Johnson managed to run away, but not without dropping several of his belongings, police said.

She was bleeding heavily from her head, and three of her grandchildren were present in the apartment when it happened, police said.  The grandmother is being treated at a Pittsburgh hospital.
