Police: suspect ‘lying in wait’ to shoot man outside Greensburg bar

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Shattered glass fell from the walkway of the courthouse Monday morning after a bullet became lodged in the window from a weekend shooting in downtown Greensburg.

“One of the stray rounds went and hit the glass and shattered the window of the annex that connects the courthouse to the magistrate area. That bullet was retrieved from the glass,” Greensburg Police Captain Shawn Denning said.

Greensburg police said a suspect lying in wait fired seven shots at one victim and hit each leg.

“The victim, he’s still at Forbes Hospital, he’s undergone surgery and believed to be in stable condition. He’s yet to be interviewed by the detectives because of the state of his injuries,” Denning said.

A second victim, who was walking with a cane, was innocently struck in the crossfire.

He was treated and released from the hospital.

Police said the victim, who was the intended target, returned fire with one shot, but officers do not believe anyone was hit.

Police believe something inside the bar sparked the violence, outside.

“It was determined that there was some sort of verbal argument inside the Rialto, and the bar addressed that issue and kicked several individuals out of the bar,” Denning said.

While police are checking surveillance and working to identify a suspect, they’re just thankful more people weren’t hurt.

“He put a lot of people in harm’s way and it was fortunate it wasn’t worse than it was,” Denning said.

Greensburg police said this is an isolated incident, but they’re going to be stepping up patrols in this area to make sure people feel safe.
