Tarentum Bridge closed for rehabilitation project

TARENTUM, Pa. — A planned full closure of the Tarentum Bridge is in effect as of Wednesday morning.

Restrictions started Tuesday evening ahead of the closure, which went into effect about 12 a.m. Wednesday.

The closure is part of a $3.24 million bridge rehabilitation project, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Eastbound lanes of the bridge, heading toward New Kensington, will be closed until Sunday. Westbound lanes, heading toward Tarentum, will stay closed until June 27.

The following detours will be posted during the closure:

Westbound

  • Follow Route 366 (Tarentum Bridge Road) eastbound
  • Follow Route 366 eastbound toward New Kensington at the Route 56 split
  • Tarentum Bridge Road becomes Stevenson Boulevard
  • Stevenson Boulevard becomes Freeport Street
  • Turn right on Pennsylvania Route 56 Truck (Second Street)
  • Second Street becomes Industrial Boulevard
  • Make a left onto Ninth Street and cross the C.L. Schmitt (New Kensington) Bridge
  • Take a right to Freeport Road
  • Follow Freeport Road to Ross Street
  • End Detour

Eastbound

  • Same detour in opposite direction

Another detour option that drivers have is the Lobaugh Bridge in Freeport.

During the current closure, crews will perform expansion dam replacement operations and install concrete overlay on the bridge ramps, PennDOT said.

The overall project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021.
