The leaders behind the website announced this week they will no longer feature beef in any new content.

“Beef won’t appear in new Epicurious recipes, articles, or newsletters. It will not show up on our homepage. It will be absent from our Instagram feed,” the site announced.

But the site said it’s got nothing against the cows or the people who enjoy a good steak. They also said they don’t hate hamburgers. Instead, the move is focused on sustainability.

“We think of this decision as not anti-beef but rather pro-planet.”

The United Nations says that nearly 15% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide comes from livestock and that most of that comes from beef, CNN reported.

The group, which had been phasing out beef recipes for more than a year, also says that beef production is 20% less efficient than growing beans.

The National Cattleman’s Beef Association said before the publication’s announcement, that cattle and beef production makes up only 2% of greenhouse gas emissions, the “Today” show reported.

“U.S. beef production is the most sustainable production system in the world, a fact long understood by America’s cattle producers, who between the 1960s and 2018, reduced the carbon footprint of the industry by 40% while producing 66% more beef,” the association said in its reports.

They also admit that beef isn’t the only problem. There are “environmental costs” and “problems” with raising poultry and seafood, and with growing soy.

Previous content that contained beef will remain on the website, Epicurious said.
