Golden Globes 2020: Awkwafina makes history, becomes first Asian-American woman to win best actress

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Actress and rapper Awkwafina took home a Golden Globe award Sunday night – and made history in the process.

According to The New York Times, “The Farewell” star was named best actress in a musical or comedy, becoming the first Asian-American to win a lead actress award.

“This is great. Thank you. If anything, if I fall upon hard times, I can sell this, so that’s good,” she quipped during her acceptance speech.

After thanking director Lulu Wang, co-star Zhao Shuzhen and others who worked on the film, the 31-year-old gave shout-outs to her family.

"I’d like to dedicate this to my dad, Wally. I told you I’d get a job, Dad!" joked the actress, whose real name is Nora Lum.

She also thanked her grandmother, who raised her, and her mother, who died when Awkwafina was a child.

“I always hoped was watching from somewhere above, and I hope that she’s watching now,” she said.
