HVAC contractor accused of spying on girls in restroom at New Jersey middle school, police say

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — An HVAC contractor who made a few unauthorized installations in the girls' restroom of a New Jersey middle school is now facing multiple criminal charges.

Gregory Mahley, 51, of West Deptford, New Jersey, was arrested Wednesday morning after a swift investigation indicated he was the source of mirrors found inside three restroom stalls at Glen Landing Middle School in Gloucester Township, WCAU reported.

According to the Courier-Post, an astute teacher first noticed the mirrors affixed to the interiors of three stalls, and a custodian asked to take a closer look determined the mirrors were positioned to provide a view of the stalls from inside an overhead air-conditioning vent.

“The most despicable thing that can happen is someone compromising our children where they are typically safe,” Gloucester Township Chief of Police David Harkins stated during a Thursday news conference. ""It’s reprehensible."

Mahley, an eight-year employee of Westville, New Jersey-based Multi-Temp Mechanical Inc., has been charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child (manufacturing of child pornography), invasion of privacy and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child (possession of child pornography), WCAU reported.

Harkins said detectives recovered unspecified “electronic devices” during the investigation and that a search of Mahley’s home is expected, the Courier-Post reported.

“At this point, we do not have any evidence that the suspect had any criminal contact with students,” Harkins said during the news conference, adding that police are trying to determine whether any students were photographed in the restroom.

An inspection found no similar issues at other township schools, WCAU reported.

“We are backtracking now to see where (Mahley) may have gone,” Harkins said, noting Multi-Temp Mechanical is cooperating “100%” and had already provided Mahley’s work logs, the Courier-Post reported.
