While Charles is now king, he became the monarch after Elizabeth’s death. However, the question of when his coronation will be held remains unanswered.

What will happen when the coronation takes place and what will Charles be doing in the meantime? Here’s what we know now.

Why don’t they hold the coronation now?

For a couple of reasons — one is tradition, the other is logistics.

There is usually a period of time between the death of the sovereign and the coronation of the new ruler.

Elizabeth waited some 15 months between the death of her father, King George VI, and her coronation.

Any idea when the coronation of King Charles III will take place?

The Telegraph reported that it is likely to be in spring or summer 2023, after a period of mourning for the late queen.

Some suggest that the coronation may take place on the anniversary of Elizabeth’s coronation. Her coronation was held on June 2, 1953.

It has been reported that Charles does not want a ceremony as elaborate as his mother’s. Charles is also said to want a ceremony that will be representative of different faiths and community groups.

What happens during a coronation?

Charles will be anointed with consecrated oil, swear an oath, given the Sovereign’s Sceptre and the Sovereign’s Orb, and then be seated in the Coronation Chair, known as Edward’s Chair.

According to Buckingham Palace, Charles will be crowned with the St Edward’s Crown, which is encrusted with more than 400 gemstones and is made of solid gold.

The coronation will take place in Westminster Abbey, the same building where the late queen was married, had her coronation and had her funeral service. The service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

What is Camila’s role in the ceremony?

Camila will also take an oath and wear a crown at the coronation. Her title will be Queen Consort.

According to the Telegraph, she will have the platinum and diamond crown made for the Queen Mother’s coronation in 1937 placed on her head.

What will Charles be doing until the coronation?

Charles is king now and will be carrying out the duties of the role now, and presumably until he dies.
