Recall alert: Frozen dog food sold at PetSmart recalled

MONROE, Wash. — Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Co. is recalling roughly 51,000 packages of Simply Nourish frozen dog food, citing elevated vitamin D levels.

“We care deeply about our customers and their pets and have put corrective actions into place to ensure this issue does not reoccur,” the company stated in the voluntary recall notice.

According to the notice, dogs who ingest unsafe levels of vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Long-term effects can lead to more serious complications, including renal dysfunction.

Affected Simply Nourish frozen food products were distributed at select PetSmart stores nationwide, the company stated.

Investigators determined that the problem arose as a result of the vitamin mix dosage being significantly reduced by the vitamin mix manufacturer, but the change was not detected or properly communicated, the recall notice stated.

The affected products are as follows:

  • Simply Nourish Frozen Chicken & Veggies: 2-pound package with UPC code 73725792262 and a “best by” range of Nov. 10, 2022 to Jan. 12, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Chicken & Veggies: 4.5-pound package with UPC code 73725792264 and a “best by” range of Nov. 10, 2022 to Jan. 12, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Beef & Barley: 2-pound package with UPC code 73725792266 and a “best by” range of Nov. 10, 2022 to Jan. 12, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Beef & Barley: 4.5-pound package with UPC code 73725792267 and a “best by” range of Nov. 10, 2022 to Jan. 12, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Turkey & Sweet Potato: 2-pound package with UPC code 73725792260 and a “best by” range of Nov. 10, 2022 to Jan. 12, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Turkey & Sweet Potato: 4.5-pound package with UPC code 73725792263 and a “best by” range of Nov. 10, 2022 to Jan. 12, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Pork & Veggies: 2-pound package with UPC code 73725792079 and a “best by” range of Aug. 26, 2022 to Jan. 13, 2023.
  • Simply Nourish Frozen Pork & Veggies: 4.5-pound package with UPC code 73725792078 and a “best by” range of Aug. 26, 2022 to Jan. 13, 2023.

No other products have been affected, no illnesses linked to the recall have been reported to date, the company confirmed.

Consumers who have dogs that have consumed any of the products included in the recall and are exhibiting symptoms are advised to contact their veterinarians.

Meanwhile, consumers who purchased the recalled items are urged to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-938-6673 from Monday-Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm PST.
